2004 Lilac TouranmentSpokane, Washington; The 38th Annual Lilac Tournament was held at the Spokane Club November 5th –7th. The open singles final between the Spokane Club’s Jay Balkenbush and U of W Grad student Joe Hagen was the most entertaining match of the weekend. Both players are very athletic and they dove all over the court making unbelievable get after get throughout the entire match. Hagen won the first game and was leading the 2nd 20-10 but Balkenbush wasn’t about to give in. Jay started making his kills and made a valiant come back that fell just short as Hagen pulled out the win 21-19. Balkenbush teamed with Phil Damiano to win the open doubles over Mike Robles and Fred Schoener in a long tiebreaker to cap off the tournament Sunday afternoon. All four players started the final match well warmed up as they all played earlier in the day. The Spokane Club and all the Spokane players and sponsors deserve a special thank you from all the tournament participants for a great Tournament.
