2003 Washington State2003 Washington State Tournament - Results The 2003 Washington State Handball Tournament was held in Bremerton, Washington, March 14th-16th. Several divisions required a Round-Robin format due to the low number of entries. Defending Open singles Champion and touring Pro Sean Lenning, did not enter, leaving the Open Singles title up for grabs. In the Sunday morning final, Hometown favorite Jim Wainwright squared off with Spokane's Fred Schoener. Jim won the 1st game handily and appeared to be in control of the match but Fred stepped up and won the 2nd game. The tiebreaker went down to the wire with Fred pulling out an 11-8 win to claim the title. *** The Open and Masters (over 40) doubles divisions were combined into a Round Robin format. All four teams were evenly matched with 3-teams tied at 2 wins and 1 lose in the end. The first tiebreaker, head to head competition, was also a tie. The 2nd tiebreaker, total points of the 1st two games, was used to decide the winners. Glenn Carden and Jon Hayes took 1st place by a mere 3 points over Bill Hayes and Larry Hoff. ***Ron Ewing teamed with Steve Sand to win the 50+ doubles final, knocking off the defending champion’s Larry Norton and Greg Bellinger 21-18,21-14. ***Christian Santos, a junior player from the MAC in Lynnwood, showed a lot of determination and hustle winning the “C” singles crown. *** Colin Clement another Lynnwood youngster showed a lot of poise and potential, grinding through a tough “B” singles field to capture the championship. ***The “A” singles was a Round Robin. The Tacoma Elk’s Gill Mendoza won all 3 matches for 1st place with Olympia’s Dave Lucas finishing 2nd.*** The 50 singles was also a Round-Robin bracket. Joe Cox won it using his big hop serves to dominate all of his opponents.*** Ron Sapp, from the MAC in Lynnwood, turned in an impressive performance. He won the 60 singles over the WAC’s Tony Whatley and teamed with Everett’s Larry Stayner to take the 60 doubles in a tough tiebreaker over George Cobean and Lea McMillan. *** The father and son team of Tony Jack Ward-Smith won the “C” doubles with a thrilling 11-10 tiebreaker in the final. In addition to the four courts at the Bremerton Tennis and Athletic Club, two courts at the Kitsap Family YMCA were used on Friday and Saturday. Judy Barker, Ramona Carden, Jackie Carden, Einar Olsen, Jill Ehlke, Cathi Easley and Raelynn Rosencrans provided non-stop food and beverages at the BTAC. Special thanks to Dean Grimbly, Rodney Johnson, Rick Herrell, Ron Ness, Jim Spencer, Jim Wainwright, Bill Thoren and Brent Duryea for their hard work during the tournament.
